In those first few weeks with a new baby, leaving the house can feel like a military operation. Feeds, nappies, car seats, a bag packed for every eventuality, and that’s before you’ve even found a parking space. It’s one of the main reasons I photograph newborns in the comfort of your own home.
Here’s why I believe an in-home session gives you not only a more relaxed experience, but more meaningful photographs too.
You don’t have to go anywhere
Whether you’re recovering from the birth, adjusting to broken sleep or juggling older children, an in-home session means there’s nothing to organise. No travel, no rushing to make an appointment, and no worrying about how baby will cope with a long car journey. I arrive, you put the kettle on, and we take it from there.
Baby is calmer in familiar surroundings
Newborns are wonderfully sensitive to their environment. At home, your baby is surrounded by the sounds, smells and warmth they already know, and that often means a more settled little one. Every session is entirely baby-led, so if they need a feed, a cuddle or a change, we simply pause. There’s never any pressure to hurry.
Your home tells your story
The nursery you spent months preparing. The bed where you’ve had those sleepy early-morning cuddles. The armchair by the window where you do the night feeds. These spaces are where your family’s story begins, and they make your photographs personal in a way a studio backdrop never could.
Years from now, you won’t just see your tiny baby in these images. You’ll see the home you brought them back to, and remember exactly how those first weeks felt.
The whole family can be part of it
Big brothers and sisters are far more relaxed in their own home, with their own toys nearby and the freedom to take a break when they need one. Partners don’t have to take a day off work just to travel to a studio. And yes, the family dog is very welcome to join in too.
Natural, timeless images
My style is soft, light-filled and natural. I work with the light coming through your windows and gently guide you into moments of real connection, rather than stiff, formal poses. The result is a collection of images that feel effortless and honest, photographs that will still feel beautiful in twenty years’ time.
“But my house isn’t tidy enough!”
This is the worry I hear most often, and please don’t let it put you off. I only need one or two rooms with some natural light, usually a bedroom or living room, and I’ll help you choose the best spots when I arrive. Anything out of shot can stay exactly where it is. Nobody expects a show home when there’s a newborn in the house.
When to book
Newborn sessions are best within the first two weeks, while babies are at their sleepiest. Because no one knows exactly when baby will arrive, I book around your due date and then confirm your session once your little one is here. I keep the number of bookings each month small, so I can always work around your baby’s arrival.
You can see my newborn collections on my pricing page, or get in touch with your due date to check my availability. I’d love to hear from you.
