Frequently Asked Questions
Planning a newborn session while you’re expecting can bring up lots of questions, so I’ve answered the ones I’m asked most often below. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please get in touch. I’m always happy to help.
Booking
When should I book, and what if baby arrives early or late?
Most of my clients book in around their 20-week scan. I keep the number of bookings each month small, so booking early is the best way to make sure I’m available for you.
Babies rarely arrive on their due date, and that’s absolutely fine. Your due date simply acts as a placeholder in my diary and secures your booking. Once your little one has arrived, just send me a message and we’ll arrange a session date that suits you both.
How much is the deposit, and is it deducted from the package price?
The deposit to secure your booking is £95. This isn’t an extra cost: it’s deducted from the price of whichever collection you choose, so you’ll only pay the remaining balance.
Is the deposit refundable?
Deposits are non-refundable. Because I take only a limited number of bookings each month, your deposit holds your place in my diary, and that space can’t then be offered to another family.
Do you offer weekend sessions?
Yes, I understand that weekends can be easier for some families, especially if a partner is back at work. Weekend sessions are available for an additional £50.
Do you charge a travel fee?
There’s no travel fee for families within a 10 mile radius of Chelmsford. I’m happy to travel further across Essex too, so if you’re outside this area, please get in touch and we can talk about your location.
Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes! A newborn session makes a truly thoughtful gift for expectant parents, perfect for a baby shower or from proud grandparents-to-be. Please get in touch and I’ll be happy to arrange a voucher for you.
Your Session
What's the best age for a newborn session?
The ideal time for a newborn session is when your baby is between 7 and 21 days old. This gives you a little time to settle in at home after the birth, while still capturing those tiny, curled-up newborn features that change so quickly.
How long does a session last?
You can expect your session to last approximately one to two hours. Every session is completely baby-led, so we’ll take as many breaks as needed for feeds, nappy changes and cuddles. There’s never any rush.
What if baby won't settle?
Please don’t worry, it’s completely normal! Sessions are baby-led and never rushed, and unlike a posed studio shoot, your baby doesn’t need to be asleep for an in-home lifestyle session. Those wide-eyed, wriggly, yawning moments make some of the most beautiful and natural photographs of all.
Can siblings and pets be included?
Yes, of course! Your newborn session is about your whole family, so big brothers, big sisters and furry family members are all very welcome to join in. Photographs of siblings meeting their new baby are often the ones families treasure most.
What should we wear?
I recommend soft, neutral clothing such as creams, whites, greys and muted tones, and avoiding anything heavily patterned or with large logos. Simple outfits keep the focus on your baby and give your photographs a timeless feel you’ll love for years to come. Comfort matters too, as there’ll be plenty of cuddling!
How should I prepare my home?
Your home really doesn’t need to be perfect. Nobody expects a show home with a newborn in the house! If the rooms we use can be free of any unnecessary clutter, that’s a great help, but I’m always happy to move bits around before we start if something might be distracting in the photos.
I mainly shoot in the living area, the nursery and the main bedroom, using the natural light from your windows.
After Your Session
How soon will I receive my gallery?
Your private preview gallery will be delivered within 14 days of your session, so you won’t have long to wait to see your photographs.
Still have a question? I’d love to hear from you.
